The first demo
I got a text from Dave Clark yesterday that said “we’re in a session right now demoing If I’m Willing”
I couldn’t believe it! I had just emailed several songs to Dave’s assistant for the listening session on
Tuesday. I knew that they had several other writers submitting songs and figured it might be a week or so before I’d even hear news about how it went. I had no idea they’d be in the studio within 48 hours and recording one of my songs!
This song has already been pretty special to me. This was my first co-write at the Co-Writing Retreat that I attended in May. I was so nervous about the co-write and remember going into the room and wondering what to expect because my two co-writers were very talented writers with lots of experience. In fact, one of my co-writers was the guy who put the retreat together……it was his dream to gather writers together for a weekend of writing.
The guys put me at ease by just being themselves. We shared ideas and I read the lyrics to a song that I’d been working on. I was so excited when they decided to go with my song idea and see what developed. We were alloted two hours to work and by the end of that time, we had pretty much finished the song and were recording it on the computer.
This song is also special because one of my co-writers sang it, per the request of the family, at the funeral of a teenage boy this summer. The mom said that the song was “written for me”. I felt so blessed that God had taken our efforts and used them to somehow help this mom during some of the most difficult days of her life.
So, when it was time to submit new songs for SundayBest Music, I went to the church and recorded the song on my laptop because I knew this was one song I wanted Dave to hear. I converted it to an mp3 file and sent it in. It is referred to as a “work tape”. I have no idea what happens from there. Since they decided to record a demo of it, I guess someone had to chart it (write down the chords and measures for the muscians to read), and then a vocalist had to learn how to sing it. Professionals do all that pretty quickly….it’s what they get paid good money for. (in my dreams…..I am a vocalist working in a studio on projects all the time!!)
I can’t wait to hear the final product! I have no idea where the song will end up…..maybe just another demo CD in my collection of demos….but hey, this is the first one and I’m jumping up and down!!
